Recovery from Prostate Artery Embolization (PAE) is usually quite swift, particularly in comparison to traditional surgical methods such as transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) or open prostatectomy. Patients often experience minimal discomfort, shorter hospitalizations, and a faster return to their usual activities.
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a condition where the prostate gland enlarges in a non-cancerous manner.
As the prostate grows larger, it can slowly press on the urethra that runs through its center. This pressure can block urine flow, causing more difficulty when urinating.
As time passes, the blockage forces the bladder muscle to exert more effort to release urine, potentially leading to muscle thickening and weakening. This increased pressure and decreased urine flow can result in various urinary issues, such as trouble initiating urination, a weak stream, and the feeling of not fully emptying the bladder.
As BPH advances, the prostate keeps expanding, worsening the symptoms. This continual growth can also make the bladder more active, resulting in a frequent and urgent need to urinate, especially during the night (nocturia).
The ongoing and worsening symptoms of BPH can become increasingly difficult to handle without treatment. As the prostate continues to enlarge, it causes mechanical obstruction and triggers the body’s compensatory reactions, which can further impair urinary function and diminish quality of life.
